ST. AUGUSTINE LIGHTHOUSE
St. Augustine, Florida

We weren't able to go inside the Mayport Naval Air Station to see the two lighthouses there. Thanks, Osama. I wrote of Cape Canaveral and Pensacola as well. Even if they let us on the base, we would not have seen anything. The fog had come in rather thick towards dusk. So, we headed south to St. Augustine and made it there with plenty of time to check into a motel and go out for dinner. We were at the lighthouse before dawn to catch the flash in the early morning light. Also captured some nice sunrise shots by the small piers. We were too early to go inside. The store, museum, and lighthouse hadn't opened yet though we talked some to a couple of guys that worked there. Next visit, I'll take the time to go in.
St. Augustine is probably the oldest town in Florida, first occupied by the Spanish in the 1500's. Shortly after the US acquired Florida as a territory in 1821, a lighthouse was built from brick to replace the old light on top of the original Spanish structure. This lasted about 50 years and was replaced in 1874 by the current tower. The old tower finally dropped into the sea in 1880.
