CEDAR ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

Sag Harbor, Long Island
New York

I found my way out to this one after getting lost back in the woods. Have I mentioned yet how beautiful Long Island is. I highly recommend you take a cruise around the coast line. I did it in a day. You couldn't get any closer than the little restaurant and store for the campground. Some bird was nesting along the strip of sand dune that now connects the island with the mainland.

Cedar Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1868 from granite blocks. It is only 35 feet tall. The US Government didn't want it and neither did the National Park Service. It became private property and is now owned by Suffolk County Parks Department. I met a park ranger who had a briefcase with all these old original documents concerning the lighthouse. The original deed for the land, etc. They sure were fond of that light. He offered to drive me out if I came another time when the birds weren't nesting.
