CROOKED RIVER LIGHTHOUSE
Carabelle, Florida

By the time we left St. Marks and made it down to Carabelle where we found the little dirt road off Hwy 98, it was pouring down rain. All these shots were taken from inside the car with the window lowered just long enough to snap the shutter. We drove around some, but it wouldn't stop while we were in the area.
Crooked River was built back in the 1890's and started its service in 1895 when the 4th order lens flashed away into the darkness of night. They automated it in 1965, and shut it off in 1995. As you can see, there is no longer an optic in the lantern. The light used to sit 115 feet above the sea in a tower only 100 feet tall. Nothing else from those years of service remain in the area.
