CURRITUCK BEACH LIGHTHOUSE

Corolla, North Carolina

Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at the north end of State Road 12 on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Very lovely setting on a rather narrow strip of land. I was coming down the stairs after paying to go up to the top and wanted a photo of the stairwell. The exposure reading, of course, required a flash, but when I used it the results were dismal. It would blacken the lower reaches. So I held a rather heavy camera, my Nikon D1X with a 16mm lens (Equivalent to 24mm with digital 1.5x factor for focal length). The digital info captured indicate a 1/2 second shutter speed and I was handholding the camera out over the railing and pointing down. I expected a blurry dark image but I got this. Wish I had moved my foot back a foot.

The tower stands 158 feet high and was constructed over a three year period with the light going active in 1875. The original 1st order Fresnel lens is still mounted there in the lantern room so you can't actually go in it, but you could get outside.

Here's how I saw it:
