WESTERSCHOUWEN VUURTOREN

Kustwacht-Haamstede, Netherlands

Drove right by this one. Another one of your drive around and look, drive around some more. There's a road that runs along the coast but you can't see the coast for all the foliage. It goes through a park and all along there is self-service pay for parking. I parked along there and walked to a driveway entrance which is actually the back of the vuurtoren. I had first stopped in front of the tower and found the Don't Come In Here sign. Took what shots I could and drove around to the north side of it for a couple of shutter clicks and then to the back for the best shots of the whole tower.

You drive down N57 from Ouddorp and turn right when you see the signs for Burgh-Haamstede. Wander on back towards the coast to find this peppermint stick tower that they built back in 1840. Started it in 1837 and finally lit it up on March 25th, 1840. Its white light flashes from 58 meters above sea level while the tower stands 50 meters high. This is one powerful light that can be seen 30 nautical miles out at sea. They electrified it in 1934.

Here's how I saw it:
