HENDRICK'S HEAD LIGHT
Southport Island, Maine

This was one of the hardest for me to find in all of the ones I did see in Maine. I had to finally ask directions from a couple of friendly folks walking their dog. The lighthouse is privately owned, though still in service and is at the end of a private road you can't go on. There is a public beach right there where the private road meets Beach Road. You can park there but be careful, that perfect little outcropping looks perfect for taking a picture but it is private property also. You need a telephoto lens for this one. And a better sun position too.
The station at Hendrick's Head was first established in 1829 and had some type of light house. It burned in 1875 and the present tower was constructed that same year. It provided its light via a 5th order Fresnel lens which was removed in 1979 and replaced with a modern optic. The lighthouse was automated in 1975.
