HUNTING ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina

After working our way back out of Folly Beach and getting on the road south, our next stop was close to Beaufort, S.C. Follow the winding road through the state park to the end. The grounds are very well kept and the beach is also quite scenic. You can tour the lighthouse grounds and climb to the top for a small fee.
This was another southern light that didn't survive the Civil War. In 1859, the first tower was built here disappeared during the war and it is not known why. The second and existing tower was constructed about a mile away from the site of the 1st tower, in 1875, to the height of 136 feet. They equipped it with a 2nd order lens which stayed in service until the light was deactivated in 1933. It is now only used as a daymark, with its distinctive black on top, white on bottom paint job.
