KULLENS FYR

Mölle, Sweden

Well Sweden is a bit rainy for me, but this place was the best I saw. Also the first. I drove down from Stockholm where I was working for a few weeks to Helsingborg on the E4. Took 4 1/2 hours. Good road, but gas was $6/gallon. There aren't any Cadillacs or Buicks in Sweden. From Helsingborg I drove north along the coast until I came to the town of Mölle (pronounced Mulla)and up into the Kullens Park. Pay a few kronor to get in. You drive through a golf course area and to the end of the road and park. You have to walk a couple hundred yards to the lighthouse, called Fyr, in Sweden. Now in Swedish, the Y is like a U so it is pronounced somewhat like fewer if you said it in one syllable.

There weren't any visitors at the time I arrived, though I did walk past three birdwatchers with their telescopes. The Lantern is the first thing you notice on the horizon as the lighthouse sits high on a bluff over looking the North Sea. The lens is massive, pretty much the size of a 1st order lens. But this lens is three sided unlike the 1st order lenses I have seen in the United States, ie round. The lens rotates around causing it to flash about once every 5 seconds. The lighthouse was closed at the time, although more folks started to show up as I was leaving. Must be a seasonal thing for there is a concession stand and picnic area below the hill where the lighthouse sits. There is a plaque beside the door to the lighthouse, although it is in Swedish. It has details that I will relate once I get it translated.

Here's how I saw it:
