CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE
Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina

I was so lucky to have gotten that ferry from Ocracoke. I made it down to Cape Lookout in the early afternoon. You have to drive out onto this island which is pretty much a strip of land with houses, motels, and shuttle services out to the island with the lighthouse. No cars out there. They take you over in small boats with outboard motors, $10 or so depending on the number of passengers. I went out that afternoon and stayed for about a half hour and got pictures before coming back to the mainland. I still needed to go to Bald Head Lighthouse but I had a few days before I was to meet my mother and sisters for a family reunion on the beach at Emerald Isles. The shuttle service I used had a motel and plenty of rooms since it was Sunday evening, so I stayed overnight and they took me out the next day but dropped me off on one of the little marsh grass islands that appear at low tide. The wild horses that live one or two of the bigger islands (no human occupation) walk out to the little islets to eat the grass. Sometimes they get stranded out on them 'cause the tide comes in on them too quick. My choice had an adult pair and foal. I was with them for a bout an hour before another shuttle came by and took me out to the island where I proceeded to lay in the sun and do very little. I did roll over several times and took a few pictures. The water was beautiful and very refreshing once you started sweating from the heat.
Here's how I saw it:
