MONTAUK POINT LIGHTHOUSE
Long Island, New York

Incredibly scenic drive out Hwy 27 to the very end of the southern tip of Long Island. I drove it twice, with the first time only serving to make sure I knew how to get there. You couldn't see the tower, the fog was so thick. The day soon turned into a torrential downpour and I gave up and went back to my hotel in New Jersey. That Verrazano Bridge is a $7 toll when you leave Brooklyn. It's free coming from Staten Island. But there is one from New Jersey to Staten Island that is $6. I figure that NYC is still in big debt with tolls like that.
Anyway, the next day was quite different as you can see in the above image. A sterling day and the day I had to leave finally. 6:30 PM flight out of JFK. I got to Montauk sometime after lunch. Pay $5 to park. More to go in the lighthouse. I parked but stayed outside the fenced area. That structure to the left of the tower is a submarine lookout tower used in WWII. You can't see it at all in the photo below. There's an island out east of Montauk called Block Island which was the site of one of the last US Naval actions of the war. A Navy boat sank a German sub.
Here's how I
