OUDDORP VUURTOREN

Ouddorp, Goeree
 Netherlands

Every so often, I'd have to drive out to the dike to look for the lighthouse, and for this one, I first saw it across a cornfield. I had to make a couple more wrong turns before I finally found the road to the parking area. You could not however, walk to this one, known as Westhoofd. The vuurtoren at Ouddorp is quite new, actually. I believe that it had previous towers, but the current one was built in 1947 and first lit in 1950. It has a white light that is visible 30 nautical miles out to sea. And it is bright. I saw it from Maasvlakte along with Haamstede further south. The tower stands 52 meters high with the light's focal plane at 56 meters.

I met a couple of young German guys who were traveling around on vacation. They headed off on the trail towards the beach in hopes of gaining access to the tower. I could see through a long telephoto lens that no one was walking around the base.

Another one with a lantern cluttered with all that radar and other electronics. Although I have never been to Ireland, the rolling grassy hills along the top of the dike kinda reminded me of images I have seen of Ireland. I saw more birds here at Ouddorp than anywhere else. You can see them in some of the photos.

Here's how I saw it:
