OWLS HEAD LIGHTHOUSE

Owls Head, Maine

Just south of Rockland is the Owls Head Light. Easy to find go left at the Owls Head Post Office. You gotta a short hike from the parking area. It isn't really much of a lighthouse, although it is made of brick instead of cast iron in the fashion of its west coast look alikes. The view is superb from the tower though, worth hiking up all those stairs. I have visited this light twice. Got better photos the 2nd time and you can see them in the selections below.

A lot of legend surrounds this place. There's a story about some frozen lovers who were thawed out and restored to health, a keeper that convinced his Indian captors to lend him a gun so he could shoot some ducks. Duh! And the keeper's dog whose persistent barking helped prevent a shipwreck. Cool. And they say it is named for the owl head shape that is seen in the cliff formation below the tower. I don't know. I can't see it in any of the photos I have seen taken from the water. I myself don't have such.

Owls Head  Light was built in 1826 and equipped with a 4th order lens.

Here's how I saw it:
