PAKRI TULETORN

Paldiski, Estonia

 

After a short drive from Suurupi, we arrived in Paldiski. Since I wasn't driving, I spent more time looking out the window. That was a nice luxury, to be driven around a foreign country with two friends who knew the country and the language. They took me back to places I would have never found. Like Suurupi Alemine.

So Paldiski is a left over from the Soviet occupation. Seems like near every coastal town, there were the ruins of the Soviet Army installations. Pakri, my two guides told me, meant trash place. My view of the area, as we drove out to the tuletorn, was somewhat bleak. Even the tuletorn suffered the same general neglect.

Pakri was built in 1724 at 52 meters high. Sitting up on a small bluff raises its focal plane to 73 meters. There is this old relic of a building vaguely resembling a lighthouse but then...
