PERKINS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

Georgetown, Maine

This one gave me a bit of a challenge. Not with finding it, but finding a place to park along the very winding and hilly road through Parker Head, Maine. I finally secured a tiny roadside turnout, or maybe that was just a big skid mark in the grass. That I was legal is what mattered.

Perkins Island, the 4th light down the Kennebec River, was also built in 1898. The tower is just a little thing, only 23 feet high, but it is located up on the bank enough to give it a focal plane of 41 feet. It once housed a 5th order lens but now has a modern optic with a white/red flash. The octagonal tower is constructed of wood.
