POND ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Popham Beach, Maine

So you finally get down to the end of 209 and you can see Pond Island out marking the west side of the mouth of the Kennebec River. Just the tower, built in 1855, remains. Even smaller, the diminutive 20 footer still housed a 5th order lens, though, that has been replaced by a modern optic. The conical shape of the island makes up for the tower's height, placing the focal plane at 52 feet. They automated this one in 1963 and it continues to operate.
