RAM ISLAND LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE

Portland, Maine

 

You can see the Ram Island Ledge Light from Portland Head Light. I took these photos standing at the back left side of the light, up against the fence. It looks old and beaten on by the weather, but truth is, this light was constructed in 1905 with a 3rd order lens. The tower stands 72 feet tall and is made out of granite blocks. 

It is still an active light although the old Fresnel was removed and replaced with a modern optic, that probably coincided with the time it was automated, that being in 1959.
