CAPE SAN BLAS LIGHTHOUSE
Cape San Blas, Florida

Cape San Blas is a little elbow bend up in the panhandle of Florida, between St. Mark's and Panama City. Out at the end of it, on Air Force property sits the skeleton tower of Cape San Blas Lighthouse. We followed a dirt road west off the bend in the main road before it headed north.
It took them three time with this one before they built one that would remain standing, the current one having been erected in 1885, first salvaging it from the ship carrying it to Cape San Blas after it sank off the coast. The first light was constructed in 1847 but fell down in 1851 in a hurricane. The next one went up in 1856 and lasted only several months before falling over. They put it back up but the Civil War kept it out of commission until the 1870's, when finally erosion claimed another victim, and the tower toppled into the waves. Despite the fact that this current tower has withstood the elements, it has been relocated twice to escape erosion.
