SCHEVENINGEN VUURTOREN
Scheveningen, Netherlands

Scheveningen was the first vuurtoren I saw in the Netherlands. It was the last word I was able to say. The Sch sounds like you are clearing your throat, not a common sound for Americans to make. I got it down now. I drove up and over from Delft through Den Haag (The Hague) and into the town. Couldn't find it so I asked directions. Someone gave me very accurate ones at a petrol station. It sits in a neighborhood of very closely built houses and overlooks a public beach. Lots of sand and really long this beach is. Probably runs all the way up to Den Helder.
The 12 sided tower, standing 30 meters high, was built in 1875 and illuminated on the 20th of December of that same year. It was converted to electricity in 1909. The white light flashes twice in 10 seconds and from 49 meters above the sea, it is visible from 29 nautical miles out. It was the first of several vuurtoren that had that same Neptune weathervane on top.
I had to wait a little for the sun to come up enough to take pictures. Then there were all those rain clouds that followed me everywhere I went.
Here's how I
