SPRING POINT LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE

South Portland, Maine

 

 

 This is the very first lighthouse I photographed for the images on this site. Daybreak in September, it would be a beautiful day that took me all the way down the coast to York and my first 5 lighthouses. Remember that I was doing this for a Christmas gift to my mother, but after this first lighthouse with the serenity of dawn, I figured that I might be in trouble.

My 2nd visit to the area gave me the afternoon light this time and it wasn't nearly as cold and windy as it had been at the beginning of my day down in Kittery and Cape Neddick. They built this one in 1897 and furnished it with a 5th order lens. A 54 foot high spark plug tower, it sits right out at the end of a short jetty. There are some ruins of an old fort, Fort Preble, nearby.
