ST. MARKS  LIGHTHOUSE 

St. Marks, Florida

 

 

Drove from Egmont Key at sunset all the way to Tallahassee and spent the night there. Got up first thing and drove out through the marsh land to St. Marks, almost due south of Tallahassee, in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. This is one of my mother's favorites as she first visited it many years ago. 

There are a number of view locations around this lighthouse, and the marshes really add to your composition's. Lots of seabirds. Very scenic place, but as you can see, we hit our first really rainy day of our southeastern lighthouse adventure. At least it wasn't precipitating although I did hurry to the shelter of the car at one point.

This was the third tower built at the current location. The first one built in 1831 was constructed with hollow walls and had to be torn down. The second tower fared no better and was pulled down before river erosion brought it down. The existing tower was lit in 1842 and shines from about 73 feet above sea level.
