ST. SIMONS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

St. Simons, Georgia

 

I think we got to this one around lunch time. Met this artist who lived down in Islamorada, in the Florida Keys. St. Simons is another of those well-kept locations. In fact it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

A light was established here back in 1811 but that tower was blown up during the Civil War. The existing tower  was erected in 1872. It is still operational and contains the same 3rd order lens. The tower stands 104 feet high. There is a gift shop in the building and you can pay a fee for a tour and climb up the tower. 

Take the St. Simons Causeway east from Brunswick, Ga. over to the island and the follow King's Way to the beach. Signs guided us the rest of the way. Take a picnic. It is a beautiful place. Beach and pine trees.
