CHARLESTON LIGHTHOUSE

Sullivan's Island, South Carolina

 

So my friend Judi and I packed up at her house in Atlanta  and took off early in the morning and headed east towards Columbia, SC. What a spectacular morning that was, as it was pitch dark and the sky was wide open on Highway 20 while that meteor shower went off like fireworks. We were headed for Charleston and the beginning of a 1 week trip that would take us all around the tip of Florida and up the Gulf Coast to Panama City during the week of Thanksgiving 2001. Over 3000 miles. Didn't stay in the same place twice. 

Charleston Light is ugly, sorry. Triangular and aluminum siding. Looks like an airport control tower. The 140 foot tower was finished in 1962 and has a modern optic. Never had a Fresnel lens. Never will. Only lighthouse in the US to have an elevator. You can see the Morris Island Light from the beach.
