CAPE ELIZABETH LIGHTHOUSES

'TWO LIGHTS'

Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Two Lights State Park wasn't much that I could tell, but the lighthouses were pretty. I ran into some scuba divers getting ready to do some kind of rescue diving practice thing.

Called Cape Elizabeth, this point south of Portland Head Light once worked as a pair. Both properties are privately owned and only the front one is still active. I was able to take better photos on my 2nd visit. The photo above is the East Tower and then of course the one below is the South Tower, ah just kidding, the West Tower.

They were both built in 1874, although the site has been a light station since 1828. The east tower is 67 feet high and made of cast iron. The 2nd tower is of unknown height. It was decommissioned in 1924 and the lens was removed. The top was restored in 1985 by the then current owners. The west tower remains inactive.

The east tower was originally equipped with a 2nd order lens, but now has a modern optic light. It can be seen 27 miles out to sea, one of the most powerful lights in New England.

Here's how I saw it:
