WEST POINT LIGHTHOUSE

West Point Lighthouse is located on the very tip of the north entrance to Elliot Bay. It is located in the now deactivated base, Fort Lawton. I drove through the military base on a cold and rainy day and parked down near the lighthouse just long enough to shoot a few frames. As you can tell I didn't have many vantage points and it started to rain anyway. I think the street I used was Government Way. I think next time I'll park and hike in along the southern beach.

West Point Lighthouse was built and exhibited its light for the first time in 1881 through a 4th order Fresnel lens. It still serves the lighthouse today. The structure has been damage from debris being blown in off the Sound, as it sits very close to the water. The fog signal building was added in 1906. The first signal was a bell and was later replaced by a horn. The light produces an alternating red and white flash. It is amazing how those lens focus the light so intensely.
