EMPEROR TAMARIN
Saguinus imperator

2/7/05 - Can you believe there's a critter cuter than the Cotton-Top Tamarin, and a cousin at that. I found a pair of these darling little Yosemite Sam's at the San Francisco Zoo. As many times as I have been, this is the first I have seen them, so I think they are new to public exhibit.
Unfortunately they are in a glass enclosure that gets such bad glare, it is next to impossible to see them through the window standing in front of the long side. But I was able to get all of these shots from a vantage point around the corner looking in through one end of the enclosure. I also had to put my lens against the window so that the reflections and glare in the glass were eliminated. Then it was just a matter of waiting for one of them to position itself in a place that I could frame. I had the problem of needing the flash and several shots were composed perfectly but a branch in the foreground left a shadow of similar shape across the face of his little majesty. He is an Emperor, after all.
