GRIZZLY BEAR

Ursus Arctos Horribilis

JBC Photography

This has got to be one of the best zoo photos I have taken so far. I was at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. I had come in the back gate and walked over to this exhibit first. The two bears were pacing back and forth across the creek and I would wait for one to turn its head while crossing the creek. To my surprise, they met in the middle and stood up to play fight. The 'Griz' is a subspecies of the Brown Bear. My Smithsonian book listed 8. These two in the picture above are brothers and are in fact grizzlies, I was told during a recent visit. The plexiglass window has gotten quite blurred with water droplets and was not worth the effort that last visit. I hope they clean it before my next trip.

4/17/05 The SF Zoo now has a pair of grizzly sisters. Troublemakers from Montana that were on the soon to be exterminated list when the zoo was able to give them a home. What a pleasant addition, since these two young ladies love to play. If you live in the Bay Area and you like to go to the zoo, then hurry and check these girls out before they grow up and get boring like the two lion cubs have. They have begun to take after their father. Sleepy heads.
