African Lion

I think this guy here likes having his picture taken. He sits right out at the edge of the slope that goes down into the moat, and poses. Lays there broadside with his magnificent mane and looks up into the sun. Yawns some. He lives at the San Francisco Zoo and is the father of the two cubs that also live there. A brother and sister and they are cute as can be when they play.
The African Lion is one of the four great cats gifted with the ability to roar, due to some kind of hollow bone structure in their nasal area of the skull. It is a knee-weakening sound. It would chill me to the bone to hear that out in THEIR environment (as well as weaken my knees). I also read that the purpose of the mane is for defense against being bitten in the neck by rival males.
I read something else, that cats don't cross-breed in the wild, but in captivity when kept together, have produced offspring. If it is a male lion with a tigress, the result is a liger, and the male tiger and lioness produce a tiglon.
