ORANGUTAN

Pongo Pygmaeus

I found this old guy at the Sacramento Zoo. He had a Rastafarian look, I thought, and the most wizened old face. He didn't sit still much but he was slow moving enough to get a few pictures.

Orangutans live primarily in Borneo (P. pygmaeus) and Sumatra (P. abelii) and prefer to stay in the forest canopy. Only the males will come to the ground occasionally. Usually a single offspring is produced and it stays with the mother for about 8 years. Orangutan means 'Person of the Forest' in the Malay language.

My favorite one is Lips, who lives at the SF Zoo. She seemed very shy and hard to get a good picture of at first. I found out that her mate, Rusty, had died of a heart attack. She was devastated by that and would not come out of her inside room for weeks, according to a docent that I met at the gorilla compound. At any rate I have figured out her routine now and can usually get a shot or to before she heads for cover. I love her hat.
