PROBOSCIS MONKEY

This guy  is not found in the zoo. Evidently, they get very depressed in captivity (who wouldn't!) and die. Proboscis monkeys live on the island of Borneo and when I visited there recently, I took a tour up an side creek of the Kinabatangan River near Sandakan, Borneo. These strange looking monkeys come back to the river in the late afternoon to sleep for the night in the trees.  Our guide said that predators such as pythons tend to eat them if they stay in the jungle. And get this, he said they recently discovered a 40' long python. Can you picture that!

My apologies for the showing the erection. I was lucky to get any pictures and since he has one all the time. It was dark and I could see the outline of the monkey so I got a focus and flashed at the guy. They came out well enough to see his nose and other obvious features..

They eat this toxic bacteria along with the leaves it grows on. They do swim well. Male keeps a harem of 6-10 until one of his sons comes back to defeat him and take over the harem. The bachelor males also live in groups generally several trees away from the dominant male and his girls.

I did manage to find a link for you to learn more: Proboscis Monkey
