RIVER OTTER

Lontra canadensis

These frisky little ones will win your smiles. This is a pair at the San Francisco Zoo. They are usually out swimming around the pools or grooming. They play often and are entertaining to watch.

In the wild, otters are generally loners, until it is time for breeding, when they pair up. They feed mostly on fish but will also eat crayfish, frogs, salamanders, etc. Great swimmers. More of this kind of otter than the other species.
