WHITE-HANDED GIBBON
Hylobates Lar

This was a very opportunistic shot. I was at the Oakland Zoo one weekend, looking to get some good photos. I had been watching and taking pictures of the Siamangs in the enclosure across from this one's. As I naturally progressed over to the gibbon island, I saw this one hanging right out in front, eating the banana. I was composing and focusing as I walked towards the gibbon, and managed just two shots before it dropped the peel and took off swinging.
For more information, check out Oakland Zoo's web page on their white handed gibbon. There's some very interesting facts to be discovered, like they are the fastest, quietest, and most far-traveled in a day of all the forest apes and monkeys. And like lemurs, they can't swim and won't jump across water even though they can clear 30 feet from tree to tree!
